Is using dental lasers safe for the clinician, my staff and my patients?

I hope you are all healthy and safe since my last letter to the fellow Academy of Laser Dentistry members. As I write this letter to you, my city has become the number 1 hotspot for COVID-19 in the nation, with rumors that a packing company was offering its employees a bonus to work even if they were sick.

Greetings to Fellow Dental Professionals,

I hope you are all healthy and safe since my last letter to the Academy of Laser Dentistry members. As I write this letter to you, my city has become the number 1 hotspot for COVID-19 in the nation, with rumors that a packing company was offering its employees a bonus to work even if they were sick. Unfortunately, COVID spread quickly through the plant and we went from having 30 positive cases to 1300 in less than two weeks. This definitely illustrates the importance of social isolation.

I have initiated a task force to find references to give answers to “Is using dental lasers safe for the clinician, my staff and my patients?”. I have asked Eric Linden to head the project with Nancy Fitzgerald, Sam Low (representing Biolase and ALD), Mary Lynn Smith, Tina Adar (representing Fotona), Charles Kerbage (representing Convergent), Alex DiSessa (Ultradent). By initiating this stand on how to safely use lasers and possible concerns on the use of lasers, we can ease the stress our corporate members and members can gain in the use of dental lasers.

I hope you have checked out our virtual learning sessions. There have been some outstanding clinicians giving Zoom courses and they are free to you as members of ALD. We have filled the schedule until the end of May and if we are still quarantined, we will book more.

Finally, the media is thanking physicians, nurses, grocery workers, delivery persons, truck drivers as they should, but as a dentist who is working to prevent emergencies going to the emergency room at the hospital and possesses that feeling of commitment to the well-being of my patients, we also need a big thank you, as well as all of the auxiliaries and staff personnel that make it possible for us as dentists… Thank you. Stay healthy.
