Course Description
MODULE: Laser-Assisted Restorative Dentistry and Endodontics
OVERALL LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1.Define the micro-invasive approach in restorative dentistry and endodontics. 2.Describe the advantages and limitations of using lasers in restorative dentistry. 3.Define the photoablation and photoacoustic mechanisms of lasers. 4.Describe the techniques for laser ablation of dental tissues. 5.Discuss the benefits of using lasers in deep decay removal. 6.Define the changes of the tooth structure after laser irradiation and bonding procedure. 7.Identify the applications of laser usage in endodontics. 8.Describe the techniques for laser root canal decontamination. 9.Define the mechanism of laser-assisted pulp capping. 10.Describe the techniques for laser-activated irrigation in endodontics. 11.Identify the evidence-based literature on photoacoustic techniques in endodontics. 12.Determine ideal laser operational parameters in restorative dentistry and endodontics.
Topics covered: •Laser-hard tissue interaction •Selective dental tissue ablation and modification •Laser applications in caries diagnosis and prevention •Adhesion and lased enamel and dentine •Laser photopolymerization •Management of dental hypersensitivity •Laser applications in vital pulp therapy •Conventional laser endodontics •Photo-activated disinfection in endodontics •Photodynamic therapy in restorative and endodontic procedures •Laser applications in dental bleaching/whitening Workshops: Multi-wavelengths workshop on extracted teeth •Cavity preparation •Ceramic restoration removals •Pit and fissure sealants •Pulp capping •Cleaning and disinfection of the root canal
Each candidate will gain hands-on experience on patients with selected laser wavelengths (Er,Cr:YSGG, Er:YAG, diode, Nd:YAG, and CO2) and perform 1 clinical procedure on a patient at the candidate’s practice under the virtual mentorship of one of the course instructors.
