The Academy of Laser Dentistry
2019-2020 Webinar Series

Program Description

The intent of the series is to provide an ongoing flow of information relative to lasers and light therapies to ALD members and those interested in learning about laser use in dentistry. The selected topics are a brief look at subjects that will be more fully discussed and presented at the upcoming ALD Annual Conference – Dentistry's Laser Meeting. ALD seeks to deliver programs that focus on important safe laser use as well as controversy, regulatory issues, developments, and challenges faced by dentists in the delivery of improved care. The principal intended audience is dentists and hygienists and those individuals who work in dentistry.

Each topic is delivered virtually in a webinar format with a Q and A session for each program.

Oxygen is Key

Overview

Break the cycle of gingival inflammation and disease with the power of oxygen delivered deep into periodontal pockets via a prescription tray. If you are frustrated by tissue that chronically bleeds, by patients who fearfully refuse treatment, or by ineffective homecare, then this is your course. Scaling combined with prescription trays leads to better reductions in pocket depths and bleeding than scaling alone. Your patients need this help and they can only get it from you.

After completing this course you will understand:

  • The benefits and limitations of antimicrobial and mechanical therapies for biofilm control.
  • How and why antimicrobials with oxidative/reduction reactions effectively manage biofilms.
  • How to incorporate localized antibiofilm therapies into existing treatment plans
Presenter(s)

Tanya Dunlap is the Managing Director at Perio Protect, where she has worked since 2005. She served as the research liaison for the company, working with principal investigator testing Perio Tray® therapy in controlled clinical trials and microbiological studies. Her expertise on this adjunctive periodontal therapy is grounded in the data, explaining how the prescription trays work and which patient candidates can benefit from them.

Photobiomodulation-Low Level Lasers: The new secret weapon in Dentistry

Gerald Ross, DDS View Details July 24, 2019 7:00pm - 8:00pm ET ALD Members - Free; Non-member: $50 Video

Overview

Laser energy has many applications for oral health management including local and systemic influences. These range from post-operative wound healing decreasing reliance on opioid medications to anti-inflammatory effects both centered around photo bio-modulation (PBM). Photo dynamic therapy (PDT) can have dramatic effects on managing microbial disease of the oral cavity without initiating antibiotic resistance.

  • Pain control after surgery.
  • Improved healing of implants and grafts.
  • Treating dry socket.
  • Eliminating use of opioids.
  • Nerve regeneration.
  • Treating facial pain and TMD pain.
  • Treating soft tissue lesions such as cold sores and aphthous ulcers.
  • Preventing and/or treating mucositis.

Laser devices; freestanding and using surgical diode laser devices for PBM will also be discussed.

Educational Objectives

  • Understand the science and dosage parameters of PBM.
  • Recognize what dental procedures can be successfully carried out with PBM.
  • Learn what devices can be used for PBM in a dental practice.
Presenter(s)

Gerry Ross has been practicing general practice dentistry for 48 years. He has been using lasers in his practice since 1992 and has been doing PBM since 1993. He has given over 200 laser lectures around the world. Has published numerous laser articles, has written PBM chapters for 2 textbooks, does peer review for 4 journals and is a member of the Editorial Board of "Photobiomodulation, Photomedicine and Laser Surgery". Dr. Ross holds advanced certification from ALD and is a course provider for ALD. He is a member of the Board of Directors for ALD and chairs the Certification committee. He was awarded the Leon Goldman Award for Clinical Excellence by ALD in 2016.

Oral Medicaments are Synergistic to Laser Applications

Overview

Laser energy has many applications for oral health management including local and systemic influences. These range from post-operative wound healing decreasing reliance on opioid medications to anti-inflammatory effects both centered around photo bio-modulation (PBM) . Photo dynamic therapy (PDT) can have dramatic effects on managing microbial disease of the oral cavity without initiating antibiotic resistance.

Recently, there has been the development of oral medicaments that are innovative and effective to assist in wound healing, infections, management of mucositis, xerostomia, aphthous/herpetic lesions and periodontitis. Their effects mimic some of the attributes and methods of actions as laser energy. An example is oral mucositis management utilizing both photo bio-modulation, oral probiotics and anti-oxidant oral gels.

As our patients continue to seek out "natural remedies” to "treat” their oral and systemic conditions, we now have laser assisted "nutraceuticals” to can create a faster and more effective way to manage disease and associated complications.

Learning Objectives

  • Review laser wavelengths and their implications to oral and systemic health management.
  • Describe how adjunctive antimicrobial and anti inflammatory medicaments can provide a synergistic effect with respective laser applications.
  • Create strategies for patient scripting to enhance a positive case acceptance for laser local/systemic health.

Overview

Peri-implantitis is becoming a major peri-infection in next few years, as different researchers in dentistry are saying that we can expect to see 15-30% failures of all implants placed no matter how skilled the clinicians are. This didactic course will discuss baseline checks to be done on all implants, how to treat peri-mucositis and peri-implantitis with the use of laser therapy.

Learning Objectives

  • Define peri-implantitis and peri-mucositis.
  • Learn baseline checks that can be done around implants at least on yearly basis.
  • Know how to treat peri-mucositis and peri-implantitis.
Presenter(s)

Dr. Kusek is a 1984 graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Dentistry. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology (ABOI) and Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID). He has Mastership in the Academy of Laser Dentistry and Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) and is a Recognized Course Provider for the Academy of Laser Dentistry (ALD). Dr. Kusek received his Lifelong Learning and Service Recognition from AGD in 2012.
