In 2018, ALD honored 3 students with the Dr. Eugene Seidner Student Scholarship awards. The program continues to grow and flourish as academicians begin to champion laser education. Back in 2012, the Academy reached its $100,000 endowment goal. The Scholarship program is a cornerstone of ALD's endeavors to help the profession learn about the safe and effective uses of dental laser technology for patient care. Since inception, 25 students from all over the world have been honored.
"My experience at ALD was tremendous. Being a student scholar recipient, I was nervous at first, wanting to represent myself and my school well. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed and part of a much larger laser family. I made some tremendous friendships with my fellow scholarship recipients and look forward to future experiences with them. In fact, we have already agreed to meet at ALD 2019 in Dallas!
Throughout the conference, I felt as though I could approach any of the presenters or attendees and ask them anything. More impressive was the amount of free-flowing knowledge transfer between attendees and presenters! The ability to listen to first-hand experiences allowed me to see that I won’t be alone in my journey with dental lasers. I encourage anyone who is reading this to attend an ALD educational event to learn and experience for themselves the awesome power of the ALD. Once I returned home I was able to take what I learned and dive right into a few cases with tremendous confidence in my abilities, thanks to the proficiency course I received at ALD. It may have been my first conference with ALD, however, it will surely NOT be my last!"

The Dr. Eugene M. Seidner Student Scholarship is intended to promote the advancement of dental laser education and clinical research. The program encourages undergraduate and graduate dental students in the different dental disciplines to deepen their knowledge of the use of lasers in dentistry. It provides financial assistance enabling successful applicants to present their work at the Academy's annual conference and by doing so allows participation in the educational lectures and workshops aimed to advance the study of lasers and their correct and safe use in dentistry. A special award for Pediatric Dentistry is available to pediatric dental students.
Special Award for Pediatric Dentistry - Through a generous annual pledge specifically earmarked for pediatric dental students, ALD is pleased to implement beginning in 2010 a special recognition award within the Dr. Eugene Seidner Student Scholarship program for pediatric dental students. This donation recognizes the commitment to pediatric dental education by ALD member Dr. Lawrence Kotlow, a pediatric dentist practicing in Albany, N.Y.
What is awarded?
The scholarship covers one year of ALD membership, conference registration fees, Standard Proficiency Dental Laser Certification Course application fees, round trip coach air transportation for the applicant, up to 5 hotel nights in the host hotel and meals already included in regular conference registration. (Meals not scheduled within the conference program are not included.) Upon successful presentation an award in the form of a framed certificate for participation will be presented to all Scholarship recipients. A cash award for first ($500), second ($250) and third ($100) may be presented to the top 3 recipients. Presentations are graded by members of the ALD University and Academia Relations and Student Scholarship committees.
Who is eligible?
Applicants must be either undergraduate dental students or graduate dental students in a general or specialty program. Applicants are eligible through their first year after graduation of an accredited dental program. Applicants shall be nominated by dental university faculty or ALD members.
How do candidates apply?
Applications must be downloaded and sent electronically to memberservices@laserdentistry.org by October 31, 2018. Submissions must include three items for completeness:
Application and Abstract Submission Deadline
Abstracts must be submitted by October 31, 2018, following the guidelines specified in ALD's Call for Abstracts module. If research work is ongoing, applicants may provide abstract updates by December 1. If more study time is needed to complete the research study, applicants may contact the Academy to request an extension.
Applicant's Obligations
Applicants must present original research or case study(s) presented as an oral presentation, table clinic or poster presentation. Participation in the Standard Proficiency Dental Laser Certification Course, most sessions of the annual conference and the President's Dinner and Awards Ceremony is expected. Selected students are required to submit their abstract for publication in the Journal of Laser Dentistry no later than 30 days after the annual conference.

The recipient/s are required to submit a manuscript to the Academy's Journal of Laser Dentistry so that we may provide the readers with a similar experience to those that attend the presentation at the annual conference. The submission requirements are two types of electronic files: a Microsoft Word document and JPG or similar image files in high resolution suitable for print media. Full submission details are provided to student recipients in the student application.

Notification of scholarship awards will occur between January 10 - January 31, 2019 by email.
