Many of the members of the Academy of Laser Dentistry (ALD) submerge themselves in the dynamics of laser dentistry on a day-by-day basis. They put in long days at the office serving their patients, and in their "free time" they dedicate themselves in even deeper ways. They spend time in research developing new treatment techniques, write journal articles, teach at seminars, mentor colleagues, and spend countless hours volunteering on Academy committees, and they do this without the thought of being given an award.
The ALD has three awards to celebrate the hard work of its members: The T.H. Maiman Award for Excellence in Dental Laser Research, The Leon Goldman Award for Clinical Excellence, and newly named John G. Sulewski Distinguished Service Award for Outstanding Commitment and Contributions to the Academy.
Because of the level of sacrifice our members are committed to, they understand the criteria it takes when nominating another member for one of these prestigious awards. Their nominees are above the standard and show such dedication and passion.
In 2013, the ALD honored John G. Sulewski with the naming of ALDs Distinguished Service Award in John's honor. In Palm Springs during the 20th Anniversary Milestone ALD Conference, the Distinguished Service Award for Outstanding Commitment and Contributions to the Academy was officially renamed the John G. Sulewski Distinguished Service Award, in his honor.
The ALD Board of Directors unanimously chose to bestow this honor in recognition of ALD’s gratitude to John Sulewski and as a tribute and shining example of his servant leadership over these 20 years and into the future for lasers in dentistry. John's very humble acceptance of this tribute was in stark contrast to the incredible life’s blood effort that John has put into the Academy.
In 2013, the first recipient of ALD's John G. Sulewski Distinguished Service Award for outstanding commitment and contribution to the Academy is Robert Convissar, DDS. Robert Convissar, DDS, is a pioneer in the field of laser dentistry. Through Bob's educational courses and introductions to the ALD, he has referred more dentists to ALD membership than anyone else.
Dr. Convissar is a long time member, an educator for Standard Proficiency Dental Laser Courses and avid supporter of the Academy and its mission. In 2010, he authored Principles and Practice of Laser Dentistry (Mosby Elsevier). He has written over 15 peer-reviewed articles on laser use in dentistry and was contributing editor of two editions of Dental Clinics of North America (WB Saunders) on lasers in dentistry and co-editor of the Atlas of Laser Applications in Dentistry (Quintessence Books).
In addition to his private general practice in New York City, he serves as Director of Laser Dentistry at New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens in Flushing, NY. Dr. Convissar has more than 22 years experience with CO2, Nd:YAG, diode and erbium dental laser wavelengths and enjoys traveling the world-over to share his experiences.
