Award Recipients - 2009

TH Maiman Award

The TH Maiman Award is presented for excellence in dental laser research. The first laser was developed by Theodore H. Maiman in 1960. The 2009 recipient is Daniel Fried, PhD.

Dr. Daniel FriedDr. Daniel Fried is a professor in the Division of Biomaterials and Bioengineering in the Department of Preventative and Restorative Dental Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry. He received his PhD in Physical Chemistry from Wayne State University in 1992 and his thesis work involved laser ablation and spectroscopy.

Dr. Fried has been a researcher in the field of laser dentistry for the past 15 years and he has published more than 150 research publications in this field. His work has included: fundamental measurements of the optical properties of dental hard tissues from the UV to the IR, studies of the interaction of carbon dioxide lasers with dental hard tissues for laser ablation of caries and the surface modification of enamel for caries prevention, the use of lasers for the selective removal of caries and composite restorative materials, the assessment of demineralization and remineralization with polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography, and the development of near-IR imaging for caries detection.

Leon Goldman Award

The Leon Goldman Award is presented for clinical excellence. Dr. Goldman was the first physician to report on laser exposure to a vital human tooth. The 2009 recipient is Stuart Coleton, DDS.

Dr. Stuart ColetonDr. Stuart Coleton graduated from the New York University College of Dentistry in 1964 as a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon. He served in the U.S. Air Force with the rank of Captain and then earned his Post Doctoral Degree in Periodontics and Oral Medicine at NYU College Of Dentistry and for twelve years held the position of Associate Clinical Professor and Clinical Director of the Post Graduate Department of Periodontics. He is a Diplomat of both the American Board of Periodontology and the American Board of Oral Medicine. In 1971 he joined the staff of the Westchester County University Hospital and New York Medical College where he currently holds the positions of Chief Attending in Periodontics and Associate Professor in the Department of Dental Medicine respectively. He joined the ALD in 1993 as a Charter Member and is an ALD Past President. Dr. Coleton was recognized with the Distinguished Service Award; he has achieved Advanced Proficiency, Educator and Mastership Status, and is an ALD Recognized Course Provider (RCP). He is also a Fellow of both the American and International College of Dentistry. Since retiring from the active practice of Dentistry in 2005, he has maintained a consulting firm (Professional Liability Consulting) in which he works with attorneys in the defense of dental malpractice.

Distinguished Service Award

The Distinguished Service Award is presented for outstanding commitment and contribution to the Academy. The 2009 recipient is Dennis Pietrini, DD.

Dr. Dennis R. PietriniDr. Dennis R. Pietrini has been practicing general dentistry for more than thirty-eight years. In 1970, he earned his DDS degree from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry. Dr. Pietrini then served two years active duty in the United States Navy Dental Corps. In 1972, he began private practice in River Grove, Illinois. Six years later, he moved his practice to its present location in Franklin Park, Illinois.

As an active member of Gottlieb Memorial Hospital for the past thirty-six years, he served as the Chairman of the Department of Oral Medicine on three separate occasions, as a member of the Credentials Committee for eighteen years and is currently the Chairman of the Laser Safety Committee. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the Illinois State Dental Society and the Chicago Dental Society. In 1991, he was awarded a fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry. He is a Charter Member and the Past President of the Academy of Laser Dentistry. He was awarded a Mastership certificate in 1993 and was certified as a Laser Educator in 1998. Currently, his is a Recognized Course Provider. He is also the co-founder and Past President of the Midwest Dental Laser Study Club. Dr. Pietrini is one of the original co-authors of the "Curriculum Guidelines and Standards for Dental Laser Education", adopted in 1993. He aided in the revision of the guidelines in 1998.
