The T. H. Maiman Award is presented for excellence in dental laser research. This year’s recipient is Dr. Linda Otis.
Dr. Otis is presently Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. She began her pioneer work in the field of Optical Coherence Tomography in dentistry in 1991 at the University of California, San Francisco. This light-based noninvasive diagnostic technology provides cross-sectional imaging exhibiting micro structural detail in both hard and soft tissue, including tooth and restorations, early caries, periodontal tissue contour, sulcular depth, and connective tissue attachment. She has authored many research papers, published in peer review dental journals and has been the recipient of NIH grants for her work.
The Leon Goldman Award is presented for clinical excellence. Dr. Glen van As is this year’s recipient.
After receiving his dental degree from the University of British Columbia Canada Faculty of Dentistry in 1987 he began a private practice in N.Vancouver, BC. He has held the part time position of Assistant Clinical Professor of the Faculty of Dentistry and University of British Columbia in the Department of Restorative Dentistry teaching restorative and prosthodontic dentistry.
Dr. van As is a pioneer and educator in the use of dental surgical microscope. He uses his skilled clinical excellence in presenting and promoting dental lasers and related microscope education through hands-on workshops and lectures throughout Canada and the US.
The Distinguished Service Award is presented for outstanding commitment and contribution to the Academy. Dr. Donald J. Coluzzi is this year’s recipient.
Dr. Coluzzi is presently on the faculty of the University of California San Francisco, School of Dentistry, is a Dental Laser Educator and Recognized Course Provider of the Academy of Laser Dentistry. He is past president of the Academy and holds Advanced Proficiency in Nd:YAG and Er:YAG laser wavelengths. He was co-editor of Wavelengths, the Academy of Laser Dentistry’s journal and co-edited the October 2004 issue of the Dental Clinics of North America.
Dr. Coluzzi loves education and teaching. He has put in a tremendous amount of time assisting various ALD committees displaying leadership throughout all that he does.
The President’s Award was presented to Dr. Steven Parker in appreciation of his devoted leadership as president during 2005.
Dr. Steven Parker maintains a private dental practice in Harrogate, North Yorks, United Kingdom. He has been involved in the use of lasers in dentistry since 1990 and is a 1974 graduate of University College Hospital Medical School, University of London, UK. He completed his Advanced Proficiency and the Educator levels of the Laser Certification Program. He holds Fellowship and Diplomate Status with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. From 1999-2004, he was chair of the Committee on Proficiency Recognition and Editor of the Journal of the Academy of Laser Dentistry.
