The Academy of Laser Dentistry Hosts Highly Successful and Innovative Conference
New Orleans, LA ~ April 6-9, 2005
Marriott New Orleans
The Academy of Laser Dentistry’s held Source 2005: Lasers in Dentistry, the Twelfth Annual Conference and Exhibition, April 6-9 at the Marriott New Orleans. Over
400 conference registrants from 22 different countries attended
this year’s conference. This international
group of leading clinicians, academicians and researchers
met to exchange ideas and to advance their knowledge in
the technological and clinical fields of lasers in dentistry.
The conference presented many opportunities – for
experienced laser practitioners and those newly interested
in learning about this technology – to learn about
and share information about the safe and effective uses
of dental laser technology for patient care.
Two pre-conference days were set aside for the Academy’s
Laser Certification program, which includes an
Introductory to Lasers Course, Standard Proficiency and Advanced
Proficiency course and exams. This year’s conference
had forty-six (46) Standard level participants and thirty-one
(31) Advanced participants. The Standard Proficiency course
is an ideal opportunity for laser newcomers to start the
conference with a broad overview of laser dentistry and
laser physics.
The Academy was proud to welcome keynote speaker, Gavin
Pearson, LDS, RCS, PhD, United Kingdom whose presentation,
“Minimal Intervention: Application of Laser Technology”
began the conference. Dr. Scott Renfrow, University
of Oklahoma, was the recipient of the Academy’s Dr.
Eugene Seidner Student Scholarship Award for 2005.
Conference attendees experienced a myriad of innovative
programming including the Advanced Dental Clinic™,
Breakfast for Learning, Personalized Track Sessions, Picnic
for Learning and Interactive Forums. Attendees
had the opportunity to view vendor exhibits and attend the Exhibitors’ Showcase, Workshops and Seminar
Series.
The
Conference opened with a welcome reception filled with New
Orleans style festivities including a stunning laser light
show. The final night concluded the conference with the
annual President’s Awards Ceremony and Presidential
Gala. This
year the theme was New Orleans and included a parade and
floor show which attendees will be talking about for some
time. When not participating in general sessions or visiting
the exhibitors attendees explored the many restaurants,
shops and tours. A wonderful mix of social activities coupled
with the educational programming created an unforgettable
experience in New Orleans.

Testimonials
"I was a skeptic about the use of lasers in dentistry
prior to the ALD meeting in New Orleans. BUT, after learning
all of the benefits the dental laser has to offer to our
patients, I am not only convinced that it belongs in the
dental practice, but feel that it is just as important as
the dental high speed hand piece.”
Joseph Herman, DDS, Delray Beach, FL
“The ALD Source 2005 Meeting and my participation
in it will have a tremendous and by far “more-than-expected”
long-term effect on my daily practice. Having used multiple
laser wavelengths for almost a year, I now apply my wavelengths
with a much deeper understanding of what is happening and
why.”
Dr. Hubert Stieve, Germany
"What a great experience. I have had my Opus Duo
for a few months, but have really been holding back on using
it very much. I feel that I not only gained quite a bit
more information, but also more confidence to move ahead
with different proceedures. The speakers and the hands on
sessions were very helpful. Just as helpful was the opportunity
to talk to other dentists attending and discussing their
laser experiences. I'm looking forward to keeping in contact
with new laser dentist friends! I'm looking forward to Tuscon
next year .......I'll have to say, you really know how to
put on a party!!!! Thanks for a wonderful conference and
for lots of fun in the process!! "
Trudi Massaro, DMD, Seminole, FL, USA
"The Source 2005 proved a valuable source (pun
intended) of information. Visiting the conference gave me
opportunity to listen to the work done in the field of laser
dentistry and, more importantly, to speak to the practicing
fellows and exchange the ideas! Education, getting the ideas
flowing and promoting sound research is what's at core of
ALD. Thank you for a conference well organized and a good
time altogether!"
Grisa Mocnik, PhD, Ljubljana, Slovania
"The conference provided excellent continuing
education on lasers and laser therapy, including clinical
technique information that I integrated immediately into
my practice upon my return. The speakers were entertaining
and shared current evidence-based research to substantiate
laser therapy for patient care. The meeting was well organized
and the location was excellent for lectures, exhibits and
hands-on classes. I would encourage any dentist to attend
this conference, especially those owning or considering
the purchase of a laser for their practice. See you next
year!"
Coleman Burgess, III, DDS, Wilmington, NC,
USA
"I
had a great time, everyone was more then friendly and willing
to share experiences, unlike some local associations. I
traveled with my wife and she enjoyed the excursions and
met many really nice people too, look forward to next year."
Harvey Shiffman, DDS, Tamarac, FL USA
"I had a good experience at the source 2005. After
source 2005 I know more about lasers, I now have new friends
in the world; and I know a beautiful city in the United
States."
Enrique Espinosa, DDS, Pachuca, Hidalgo, México
